If others join in then that is a marvellously welcome bonus.
I have never been to Flanders and have always wanted to: stupid of me not to just get on with it, I suppose.
James A-Shttp://www.blackpitts.co.uk/blognoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6849167564811493528.post-11597386476555214242013-04-06T10:15:23.180+01:002013-04-06T10:15:23.180+01:00I have never understood the idea that we're su...I have never understood the idea that we're supposed to post so often on our blogs (daily, some say!!??). There are people whose work I enjoy but when I see yet another post popping up I switch off. Life's too short.
But I'd love to know what most people think is the ideal.... I agree entirely about the...Nice to have you back!

I agree entirely about the neonics, as those campaigning abbreviate them. There is simply no conclusive scientific proof that they harm bees; there is, likewise, no conclusive scientific proof that they do not harm bees.

It seems to me blindingly obvious that when you use a systemic pesticide that impregnates an entire plant with stuff that kills, say, aphids, the idea that it will somehow discriminate between (bad) aphids and (good) bumblebees is entirely ridiculous. Something that kills insects will also kill honeybees, and bumblebees, and lacewings and other pollinators too.

I also agree that if we were to stop using neonics tomorrow it still wouldn't solve the problem of dying honeybees. However I do think it would slow the headlong collapse a little.

The trouble is that by now, whatever research you do is going to be either funded by the industry, so discredited, or funded by a government which has already declared itself averse to banning neonics, so discredited; or funded by pro-bee campaigning bodies. So... well.

Anyway: I shall stop there as I'm now going on a bit. Agree, so nice to see you back, I really do miss your slightly acerbic but so often spot-on take on things. Your post some years ago about farmers cutting their hedges in autumn robbing birds of vital food still resonates in this household. Visited Verdun many years ago, very sad and haunting.
